At the time I was experimenting with lots of texture in my work, and this piece is heavy – layers of paint, mud, and varnish built up like the desert itself builds its character over time. It's another intuitive piece, created from fragments of my morning walks that somehow pieced themselves together on canvas.

My neighbor has a glorious prickly pear that I say hello to when I pass by. There's something about the way it stands there, so resilient and dignified, that always makes me pause. This was painted in late summer when the rabbit brush was in full bloom – that's where those yellow bursts of color come from, those cheerful explosions that dot the landscape like nature's confetti.

The purple is inspired by Russian sage, another desert survivor that adds its own quiet beauty to this harsh, sun-baked environment. The textured background in warm ochres, reds, and golds captures that intense heat and the enduring life that thrives here despite everything.

This piece celebrates the neighbors I've come to know on my walks – not just the human ones, but the botanical ones too. It's about finding beauty in perseverance and discovering that even the most challenging landscapes offer their own kind of abundance if you know how to look.
