The Land of Entrapment
Everyone joked about New Mexico being the "land of entrapment" when we moved here. I feel like we've truly lived that experience since arriving. This piece was created after a series of unfortunate events that happened after moving here – I felt like the land was testing me, asking me to prove myself and my worthiness of being a resident in these magical lands.
Using Van Gogh's iconic swirling style felt natural for capturing the dramatic energy of this place. The bold reds, oranges, and browns depict rolling hills that twist and turn like waves of molten earth, while the sky filled with swirling stars and cosmic spirals echoes that sense of being caught up in forces bigger than yourself.
The cacti rooted in the foreground represent what I've learned about resilience amidst turbulent beauty. I've earned deep respect for the land in New Mexico with its rich, diverse, ancient history. It's full of stories that are captivating and unnerving, and I continue to spiral into awakening the longer I live here.
This piece embodies both the mystique of the Southwest and the emotional intensity of being transformed by a place. It's about accepting that some landscapes don't just change your address – they change your soul. I'm grateful for the experience, scars and all.
